Well I've been thinking about buying this lens for about a month now and have finally decided to go for it. Saturday I'll be going down and picking it up. Going to pay $869.00; is that too much or just about the going rate? I've never tried macro photography before so this is a pretty big first time jump. I do see many other uses for this lens I can justify this purchase even if macro doesn't turn out to be for me. Any advise for me out there?

The 105 is also an excellent portrait lens...

In the past I owned a Micro Nikkor 55 3.5 and de Micro Nikkor 105mm 4.0. Since a few months I got the Micro Nikkor 105 VR. And it’s a killer. He (this is not a she) looks like a killer. Impressive looks. If you’re a techno fetishist this is what you need. It’s also a great paper press! And when you (amateur or pro) are a close up specialist stop looking any future! VR working very well. I even did some shots at 1/8. Remember for DX format this is 150mm!! For portraits I think this lens is TO sharp. Every small detail will be on your picture. If you use this lens for portrait please be gentle to your models and don’t use high quality aperture values between 8-16. You think this lens is shapr?

Oh, I forgot to mention that it's about 1/4 the cost of the Nikkor (used on eBay) for those who do not have deep pockets...

Didn't get the 105VR; I backed out at the last second. However I did buy a 70-200VR!! And yes it is a great lens!!
