Hello, this is a trick that works with the Nikon D50, D70, D80 & D200 but I originally wrote this for the D70 in the pbase forums. But I though I would rewrite it a bit and post it here.
Alright one issue I have always had about the D70 is the very small viewfinder. Nikon doesn't sell any specific magnifiers for it, but that is just a minor problem. There are a few options out there.
Option 1 - This is what I am currently using on my backup body.
Just buy a DK-21M, its cheap and works great. You will have to adjust the diopter all the way down to the bottom.
Price: Nikon DK-21M - 29.99 CND
Pros: The DK-21M, was designed for the Nikon D200 but works really well on the D70/D70s. It really makes a huge difference in the size of the viewfinder. It also as easy as it gets.
Cons: Because you have to adjust the diopter you lose the ability to correct for poor vision. Meaning you will have to wear your glasses if your vision is poor. Also wearing glasses may force you away from the eyepiece causing slightly reduced viewing area. It may make the viewfinder a tiny bit dimmer.
Option 2 - This is now what I use on my main body(Nikon D200) It actually works better then the one designed for the D200.
Buy a Nikon DK-17M and use DK - 22 to adapt it to the D70. In order for this to work, you must do some sanding and fitting to the cheap $5 adapter. You may also want to dremel down the threads on the DK - 17M.
Cost:
Nikon DK-17M - 49.95 CND
Nikon DK-22 eyepiece adapter - $5 CND
Pros: Better image quality. Doesn't reduce light. Fits perfectly once modified. Looks nicer.
Cons: More expensive, and not as easy. The sanding takes awhile if you do it really well. I recommend just taking some 100grit sand paper and wrapping it around your finger, took me about 45min, but I am picky.
Images:
This image show the standard D70s eyepiece (DK-20) and the DK-21M. Notice that the DK-21M sits a tiny bit higher, and has a small lip, its purely cosmetic though.
Here is Option 1 and 2 on camera. Sorry for the dust and not so great images. In real life though the DK -17M looks really nice on the D70s. Like its meant to be. The DK -21M looks good but doesn't fit as well as the DK - 17M.
Here are the two options off camera
Here you can see the standard D70 (DK-10), D70s (DK-20), DK-21M and the not yet modified DK-17M.
Here is a side by side of the DK-20 (Left) and DK-21M (right). The left camera is a D70 the right is a D70s.
Here is the DK - 22 and the 2370. The 2370 is an older version of the adapter but the Dk - 22 works best in my opinion.
PS. If you have any questions feel free to ask them. And also I might have a few more cool tricks/tutorials coming
