Which would be your pick of standard 50mm ? MF 1.1.2, MF 1.1.4, MF 1.1.8 or mabe the f1.2.0 or would it have to be the AFD 1.1.4 or f1.1.8. Nikon have made many over the years and most will still mount on modern slr's

What camera would you be mounting it on?...I have the MF F1.8 Ais, Mf F1.4 Ai, Mf F2 Ai & Af F1.8...Depending, I normally use my AF 1.8 on my Dslr since it retains focus/metering. However, with certain situations, I'll use the MF F1.4 & meter with my Luna Pro if circumstances permit (or sometimes Sunny 15 rule)...In terms of sharpness, I'd say the 1.8 Mf Ais is the sharpest overall corner to corner at all stops... But I normally use my MF lenses on MF bodies & AF on AF bodies..

I love my AF 1.8 50mm. I am always impressed with the colour it produces.

I'd have to agree with Jeffrey, my 50mm f/1.8 AF is an outstanding lens.
If you are just starting out and are on a budget then this is the lens that you will want. It's autofocus is fast and it is absolutely fantastic in low light situations while using only natural lighting. I bought mine used and I will never part with it. It is the best value for the dollar that Nikon makes.

You might want to read this sites review of 50mm F1.8 MF vs AF lenses...I have both & while the MF version can't be used in AF/metering on certain DSLR's it is abetter lens....My 2 cents www.naturfotograf.com/lens_norm.html

For low light during travelling: AF(D) 50mm 1.8 For (semi) pro report: AF(D) 50mm 1.4 For playing with DOF: 50mm 1.2 For reverse macro: all 1.8 and 2.0

If I could only pick one, it would be the 50mm f/1.8 AFD. I think it's a bit sharper than the f/1.4 and it will work on both manual and autofocus cameras.

Interesting just how many people own and enjoy the AF 50mm 1.8 lens. I have owned two of these over the years and have to agree that it's probably one of Nikon's finest optics. regardless of it's bargain price. Alas I no longer own this version I sold it last year to a friend who was looking to purchase the AFN version that was made in Japan. Thanks for your replies
