Hey I just ordered a new hot mirror for my D70 to convert it to a dedicated IR camera. I was just wondering if anyone else has dedicated cameras for IR? How do they compare with the filter way of doing things? I assume better but I am sure there are annoyances and little differences both good and bad. When I get mine I will let you all know how it works out for me, and hopfully have some new images to show.

Yes those are both great sites to learn about converting the D70. I have read a lot about it, both advantages and disadvantages. So far the good definitely outweighs the bad. I actually purchased my Hot mirror from Life Pixel. Great company to deal with so far. I will let you guys know how it works out soon enough though.

The shipping charges were a bit much from lifepixel but in the end they were worth it. I now have a fully dedicated D70 IR camera. That is all benefits over the filter way of doing things, far as I am concerned anyways. Don't have anything new to post yet but I should soon.
To anyone interested in doing this, its a very easy modification if you have some technical ability. It can be completed in a matter of minutes and is well worth it if you are really into IR and have a spare camera.

Jeffery, Have you tried any filters on your converted D70 to see whatthe outcome would be? I'd be curious to see what the effect would be if you used different colored filters...Try it & let us know...

Indeed I will have to play with some different filters. I don't think coloured filters would effect the IR spectrum much other then decreasing the amount of light, but unfortunately I don't have any to try it out with. I do have a circular polarizer that I think will cause a different effect with some objects.

A dedicated IR camera would be the easiest way to do it, but not sure I want that expence. :-) So far, I'm happy using infrared filters with my D100.
