My D80 arrived yesterday. I got a chance to take several NEF files, but on my computer on Capture NX opens them. I am not yet good at doing anything with NX, since I just uploaded it Sunday and haven't fooled around with it. So today I took several JPG fine images. I have posted one on my PBase site, so far. One of the first, full auto, and on-board flash. The dogs just came in from the rain. www.pbase.com/carlg51/image/66860077

Ideally I would like Capture 4.4 to be able to open my D80 NEF photos. However, right now no luck. I did load/update Picture Project to ver. 1.7 with the CD that came with the D80. So I can load and save as NEFs and convert to JPGs. I really hardly ever used Picture Project with my D50. I load my files directly from the SD cards to the computer. I prefer that control and I do my own organizations and file management. Capture NX does open D80 format NEFs. As this story evolves I will keep you posted in the Software area of this forum.

Great shot !! Did you do any post processing? I am asking because it looked a little "soft" in focus, and I was wondering if the D80 has some similar traits as the D200. I always have to sharpen my shots either in camera or post processing....D80 seems like a great camera...I hope I can resist the temptation

Oh all these shots are done with a D200, I was simply commenting on raw editing software. Although I assume the D80 will treat images very similar to the D200. The only post on these is levels and such done in adobe light room. I think i did sharpen them a bit as well but only moderately. The D200 by default is soft and the D80 probably is too, but personally I like it. A lot of it is probably the lens too, I was using the 18-70mm with the largest aperture. Not known for its sharpness.
But if you have a D200 the only reason I could see you considering the D80 is for a backup body. For that I think it would be perfect.

I just purchased my D80 with a 18-70mm lens. Will take it out of the box this evening. Looking forward to taking pics.

An update on software that reads D80 NEF files - Paint Shop Pro Photo XI. I got the recent upgrade. I have been a user of Paint Shop Pro software since version 5. I still have not seen an update to Capture 4.4 regarding D80 Raw files. So I have two options to open D80 NEFs, Capture NX or PSP XI. That will get me going.
By the way, I am loving the 18-135 kit lens more and more each day.
