I took my laptop to the Samoyed National with a DVD burner drive and also an 80 GB Lacie external pocket hard drive. I backed up all the NEF files to both DVD and external drive. I did not want to lose anything. I now have back-ups of back-ups, including the saved/edited jpgs which I posted to the web or shared with two Samoyed publications.
Backups are important.

I would agree for one day outings, but for this shoot, I had plenty of memory, but I shot over 2000 shots in 6 days and had plenty of time to back-up and even post photos in the evening in the hotel room.
I don't download while out on the shoot. I have plenty of SD memory. But I do transfer it from the memory cards once I return home or to my hotel room and back it up before I retire for the evening.
